SBS began in 1975 as two “ethnic” radio stations – 2EA in Sydney and 3EA in Melbourne. These days we might say “multi-cultural” stations.
They were initially licensed for three months only, and their purpose was to inform ethnic communities about the Federal government’s plans to change the health system by introducing the Medibank scheme. In the beginning they broadcast for four hours a day. 2EA broadcast in seven languages, 3EA in eight.
That is entirely consistent with SBS being “founded by a generation of migrants who came to Australia after the Second World War”.
In 1979 experimental “ethnic” television broadcasts began in Sydney and Melbourne, produced using ABC facilities. In 1980 Channel 28 – now known as SBS – began broadcasting in Sydney and… ....

With Maine’s snowmobile trails closed because of a dearth of snow, the start of the 2020-21 snowmobile season is anyone’s guess. But when the snow does arrive, one thing is abundantly clear: Maine’s 14,000 miles of trails will be humming.
Riders and club officials have many reasons to believe the state’s trail system – one of the largest in the country – will be as busy as ever this winter. Snowmobile sales are up at dealerships in Maine and across the nation. And with the Canadian border closed because of the coronavirus pandemic, riders will remain in Maine rather than heading farther north this winter. It’s setting up as an epic season. ....
