Campbell resigns from council after pleading guilty

Alex Campbell’s term on the Crescent City City Council came to a surprising end earlier this month when Campbell resigned after pleading guilty to one count of election fraud. Campbell, who was sworn into the council in January and named mayor pro tem at the same time, pleaded guilty to making a false declaration of candidacy. The plea came after Campbell was indicted on several counts alleging he ran for the city council while he lived outside the city limits. When he was first indicted, Campbell acknowledged he owned a home outside the city limits but claimed he was renting a room inside the city limits and spent the majority of his time there.

City releases economic development plan

Assisting local businesses, attracting news ones and growing the tourism industry are just three of many goals Crescent City is looking to embrace as it views a future without COVID-19 restrictions. During a virtual community workshop last week, the city council and dozens of city residents took part in an interactive economic development strategic action plan meeting. During the meeting, Rob Holmlund with PlanWest Partnership, Inc., presented a plan the city has been putting together and asked those listening in to rank their priorities in a variety of subjects. City Manager Eric Wier said creating a plan is important, but having a plan that leads to action in the city is the real key. He explained when he was hired, he found many folders with economic development plans that had never been implemented.

Crescent City Introduces and Is Already Chipping Away At An Economic Development Plan

Crescent City Introduces and Is Already Chipping Away At An Economic Development Plan Crescent City is already preparing a handful of the 86 “recipes” identified in the “cookbook” that is its Economic Development Strategic Action Plan. These include revamping Front Street and Beachfront Park, one of three areas residents said they’d like to see business growth to occur in. But at a workshop introducing the community to the plan Thursday, City Councilors said they hoped the plan wouldn’t sit in a binder on a shelf collecting dust. Councilors encouraged city staff to explore partnerships with the Crescent City Harbor, College of the Redwoods, the Small Business Development Center and others to attract tourists and entice local youth to settle in the community. They also applauded a shop local campaign idea that came from Rob Holmlund, owner of Eureka-based Malex Consulting.
