Covid: 7 hospitals to evaluate 'deep throat saliva' method effectiveness

PUTRAJAYA: The Health Ministry (MOH) has identified seven hospitals to conduct field assessments on the deep throat saliva sampling method for the COVID-19 screening tests.
Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah (pix) said currently, the MOH was still using the nasopharyngeal (nose) and oropharyngeal (throat) swab methods to detect COVID-19 cases.
“We are now at the evaluation stage and we hope to get the complete report before recommending the deep throat saliva sampling method for the Real-Time Reverse Transcription-Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) and Antigen Rapid Test Kit (RTK-Ag) tests.
“Hopefully, this method will provide accuracy and precision in detecting COVID-19 positive cases,” he said in a media conference on COVID-19 development here, today. ....

COVID: Octogenarian shares experience after 24 days in ICU

MELAKA, Feb 24: Octogenarian K (not his real name) from Tanjung Kling here is one of many people of his age who recovered after being infected with the COVID-19 virus in December last year.
The 89-year-old is among 256,678 patients who have recovered in the COVID-19 pandemic in the country which has claimed 1,076 lives in Malaysia as at yesterday (Feb 23).
Pak Cik (uncle) K, as he fondly known, recalled his experience of being admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Melaka Hospital, for 24 days as something that the community should not take lightly given the severity of the impact of the pandemic on people’s lives. ....

Preparations underway for vaccinations in several States


KUALA LUMPUR (Feb 23): Many States have been busy making proper preparations for the first day of the National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme tomorrow, including ensuring the storage facilities are all set to receive the vaccines.
In Perak, Sultan Nazrin Shah himself visited the Indera Mulia Stadium in Ipoh, one of the vaccination centres in the State, ahead of the immunisation programme which will start on March 1.
Menteri Besar Datuk Saarani Mohamad said 60% out of 34,743 listed frontliners in Perak have agreed to receive the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine shots, while the rest disagreed on various reasons such as bad allergies, pregnant or recently got married and plan to have a child. ....
