Newsom proposes $12 billion to help California homeless population


SAN DIEGO 
In what was lauded as the single biggest investment any state has ever made to address homelessness, Gov. Gavin Newsom on Tuesday announced a $12 billion proposal to create affordable housing, increase mental health services and fund other programs to get people off the street.
Newsom made the announcement at the Kearny Vista Apartments, one of two former San Diego hotels that were purchased and converted into housing with funding from the state’s Project Homekey program introduced by the governor last year.
“What we’re announcing here today is truly historic,” Newsom said. “It’s unprecedented, not just in California history. What we’re announcing here today is simply unprecedented in American history.” ....

Community leaders continue push for San Diego County to support federal policing bill


SAN DIEGO 
Community leaders on Wednesday urged the county Board of Supervisors to pass an anticipated resolution in support of a sweeping federal police reform bill named after George Floyd.
“I call on our supervisors to do what is right,” the Rev. Shane Harris, a civil rights activist, said during a news conference outside the County Administration Building.
The Board of Supervisors will decide Tuesday whether to direct the chief administrative officer to support the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act on the county’s behalf.
Among several reforms, the legislation would ban chokeholds, racial profiling and qualified immunity, a court-established concept that shields police officers and other government officials from lawsuits except in cases in which officials violate “clearly established” constitutional rights. ....

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego County is more than halfway to reaching its COVID-19 vaccination goal of administering at least one dose to eligible residents.
The county says it is at least 65% through its goal of administering at least one dose of the vaccine to 2,017,011 San Diegans, or about 75% of those eligible for a vaccine in the county. That means about 1,316,462 San Diegans have received one dose. ....
