Montgomery County Supervisor Sherri Blevins announced Friday that she will seek the Republican nomination for the seat that Del. Nick Rush, R-Christiansburg, is leaving. Blevinsâ announcement comes after Rush announced on Wednesday that he wonât seek a sixth term as the 7th District representative. Blevinsâ announcement comes a day after Christiansburg businesswoman Marie March, who lives in Floyd County, said she is also seeking the GOP nomination. âI was saddened and just surprised that Delegate Rush will not seek re-election and, shortly after that news broke, I was just encouraged by many folks reaching out to me, with the concerns that we want to move the New River Valley forward,â Blevins said. ....
The county recently approved funding of a program that has proven beneficial in providing information on ways to improve grazing. The Reading the Range program has helped increase the chance for success for Gila County ranchers, while improving the environment impacted by public grazing. Ashley Hall with the Gila County Cooperative Extension Service and Lori Brown, chair of the Tonto Natural Resource Conservation District, asked the Gila County Board of Supervisors for $30,000 to support the Reading the Range program at its March 2 meeting. One of Hallâs major programming efforts is in administering the federally funded Reading the Range monitoring program, which is in place on more than 1 million acres on the Tonto National Forest. ....

A former attendant at a Portland nonprofit that cares for those living with disabilities alleges she was fired due to racial discrimination, whistleblower retaliation and for asking for time off to recuperate from surgery, according to a new lawsuit. Lawyers for Marie Gertrude Jean Valmont are seeking at least a quarter million dollars in damages from Quadriplegics United Against Dependency, a local nonprofit in Portland known as QUAD Inc. The suit says Valmont was a hard worker beloved by residents at QUAD s Burnside Station center, 10610 E. Burnside St., earning her a promotion last August to shift lead and a one-dollar raise to $14.25 per hour. ....
Stafford supervisors voted 4â3 on Tuesday to downzone nearly 90,000 acres of agricultural land in the county from one home per 3 acres to one home per 6 acres. Downzoning has been on the supervisorsâ radar for years and four months ago, Supervisor Gary Snellings hinted at a compromise. âI think we can work something out that will be satisfactory to everyone without providing 10-acre lots,â said Snellings. Supervisors Tinesha Allen, Tom Coen and Cindy Shelton each voted against the measure, which was introduced Tuesday night by Supervisor Meg Bohmke. âI want you to know that I donât take this vote lightly,â said Bohmke. âBut the county cannot sustain the infrastructure cost in the rural areas, and the citizens in the urban services area are going to pay for all these costs.â ....
