Print The Bonita Museum and Cultural Center welcomed its first, large-scale public sculpture by resident and nationally recognized Western artist Mehl Lawson, whose piece officials said symbolizes the community’s equine tradition. Passersby might already have noticed the life-size, bronze American stud horse settled atop a stone pedestal located in the parking lot of the museum off Bonita Road. The piece an identical version of a sculpture he created for a ranch in Wyoming was mounted last week onto its base by a crane after more than a year of sculpting and fundraising during the pandemic, said Bonita Executive Director Wendy Wilson-Gibson. ....
Print A group of Carlsbad residents has filed a lawsuit against San Diego County in an attempt to overturn the Board of Supervisors’ approval of the McClellan-Palomar Airport Master Plan Update. At issue is a provision in the update that allows the extension of the airport’s only runway by up to 800 feet. Opponents of the update said the longer runway would bring more traffic, noise and pollution and that it amounts to an expansion of the airport. The county and others, including independent consultants hired by the Carlsbad City Council, say the longer runway is not an expansion, because the airport’s boundaries won’t change, and that the extension and other improvements are needed to safely accommodate present and future aircraft at the 1950s-era facility. ....

Cortez This Wednesday, California U.S. Senate candidate Kevin de Leon made a stop in San Diego as part of his statewide campaign tour. During a media briefing held at Chicano Park, de Leon gave an address focused on immigration-related topics and a federal lawsuit from the presidential administration against California laws. “Immigrant families, like mine, who still live right here deserve a shot at the American dream just like past generations of immigrants who have come to this country and have made it great,” de Leon opened. ....
On Tuesday, April 17, the San Diego County Board of Supervisors announced a vote of 3-1 to support the Trump’s Administration’s lawsuit against three California laws, sparking different reactions from organizations for and against the decision. Supervisors Kristin Gaspar, Bill Horn and Dianne Jacobs voted to support the lawsuit, Supervisor Greg Cox voted against and Supervisor Ron Roberts did not attend the meeting. As a result of the decision, the County of San Diego will file an amicus brief if the case moves on appeal to a higher court as a result of missing the deadline to file such a brief. ....
