Somerville water sewer rates go up for $580 in projects $580 mil

Aging water and sewer pipes and a race to correct infrastructure issues before the federal government slaps a consent decree on the city has Somerville residents facing significant increases in water and sewer rates for the near future.
The Finance subcommittee of the City Council, meeting last week, was asked to endorse a 7% increase in water rates and a 10.5% increase in sewer rates as part of the budget planning season.
Councilors told city administrators to take $1 million from the Free Cash account to offset rate increases for those residents identified as low- or on fixed incomes.
In a unanimous vote of the subcommittee, J.T. Scott (Ward 2), Mary Jo Rossetti, William White, and Will Mbah, all at large, and Katjana Ballantyne (Ward 7) indicated the committee would not support the requested increases without attempts to mitigate the impact of the escalating fees. Philadelphia officer shot, suspect killed

Philadelphia – A man was fatally wounded and a Philadelphia police officer was shot in the left foot during an incident Wednesday evening in the city’s Logan section according to police officials. There are limited details on the incident that occurred at approximately 6:45 p.m. in the 1500 block of West Somerville Avenue.
Police said officers at the scene fired their weapons when a 24 year old suspect fired several rounds at officers following a traffic stop.
Five officers reportedly fired their weapons. One man at the scene has been pronounced dead.
Despite the suspect shootings at officers, sources have told Law Officer that there is a concern for riots after it was revealed that the suspect was black and the officers were white. ....

Gunman Shoots Police Officer and Woman in North Philadelphia

A total of four officers then walked toward the car and ordered one of the passengers, a 24-year-old man, to get out. That man allegedly leaned back in his seat, pulled out a gun and opened fire at the officers.
The man then ran out of the car and allegedly fired another shot at the officers. The officers fired back, shooting the man multiple times in the torso. One of the officers was also shot in the foot though investigators have not yet revealed if he was shot by the suspect or hit by friendly fire.
The suspect was taken to the nearby Einstein Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 7 p.m. The injured officer was also taken to the hospital where he is in stable condition. Commissioner Danielle Outlaw spoke with the officer and his family. She said the officer has been with the department since 2016. ....
