Monmouth vacating block of street for ICS construction

A block of Archer Avenue is being vacated by the City of Monmouth for the construction of a new gymnasium at Immaculate Conception School. Aldermen approved the ordinance on first reading with a 6-2 vote to vacate the 200-block of West Archer for the new construction which has seen community members speak both for and against the vacation. WGIL previously reported that the plans for the school would see the new gym built along the north side of the existing road. Ideally, the school would build a connecting hallway from the current facility to the new building, hence the desire to vacate Archer Avenue. City Administrator Lew Steinbrecher says that the ordinance includes language that should the project not go forward, the land reverts back to the city as a street. Monmouth Aldermen to consider vacating one block of road for ICS's new gym

The Monmouth City Council next month will consider vacating one block of West Archer Avenue for the construction of a new gymnasium for Immaculate Conception School.
The school’s plans would have the new gym built on the north side of Archer Avenue and the desire of the school is to build a hallway extending across Archer to the facility to the south of the road.
Neighbors of school went before the council on Monday, mostly speaking out against the closure of Archer as it could disrupt the flow of traffic and create visual obstructions.
Principal Randy Frakes presented to the council, detailing what the school would do with the property and how the school and students would benefit from the closure of the block, one aspect being student safety. ....
