Home Minister Amit Shah is managing elections, not ECI: Mamata Banerjee

After the high-voltage second phase polls in Nandigram, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday alleged that Union Home Minister Amit Shah was actually managing the ongoing elections in the state, instead of the Election Commission of India (ECI).
Speaking at a public gathering in Dinhata-Sanhati maidan, Banerjee said: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has killed a lot of our workers. Our workers were killed yesterday in several areas. I am only waiting for the elections to be over. I will spare no one, I know the fight. I say this with great regret and with humble regards to the Election Commission, it is not managing the elections, the elections are being managed by Amit Shah. ....

West Bengal Polls: Rajya Sabha accepts Swapan Dasgupta's resignation

The Rajya Sabha accepted the resignation of nominated member Swapan Dasgupta on Wednesday.
Dasgupta tendered his resignation from the Upper House of Parliament on Tuesday after being named as a BJP candidate in the upcoming West Bengal Assembly polls.
Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh said the chairman has received Dasgupta s resignation letter dated March 16 and accepted his resignation with effect from March 17.
Dasgupta, who became a Rajya Sabha member on April 25, 2016, has been named by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as its candidate from the Tarakeshwar constituency in poll-bound West Bengal.
His term as a member of the Upper House was till April 24, 2022. ....

TMC demands cancellation of Suvendu Adhikari's candidature from Nandigram

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Wednesday demanded the cancellation of the nomination of BJP candidate Suvendu Adhikari, who is pitted against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee from Nandigram, as his name also seems to appear in the electoral roll of Haldia constituency.
This development came barely days after Adhikari, once a close aide of Banerjee, demanded cancellation of the TMC supremo s nomination from Nandigram seat.
TMC Rajya Sabha MP Derek O Brien in a letter to the Electoral Registration Officer of Nandigram assembly constituency alleged that Adhikari s name seems to appear in the electoral rolls of both Nandigram and Haldia assembly constituencies and this is not permitted as per Section 17 of the Representation of The People Act of 1951. ....

May support TMC to form govt if situation arises: Congress MP Abu Hasem

In a potentially embarrassing development for the Left-led coalition in West Bengal, veteran Congress MP Abu Hasem Khan Choudhury Tuesday pitched for an alliance with the TMC after the West Bengal assembly elections, if the situation so demands.
Speaking to reporters, the Lok Sabha MP from Maldaha Dakshin said Congress alliance partner CPI(M) forged a tie-up with ISF of Furfura Sharif cleric Abbas Siddiqui as it feared it will not be able to win a single seat.
We did not join hands with Abbas Siddiqui, CPI(M) allied with his party. I think they felt that they may not get a single seat in the elections, so they forged an alliance with him, Choudhury said. ....
