李登輝1923年出生於台灣，當時的台灣正處於日本統治下。李登輝自小以台語和日語為母語。 1945年日本宣布投降時，22歲的李登輝正在日本京都大學就讀。
河崎真澄表示，在日本殖民時期接受過高水平日本教育的人，如李登輝總統，用日語和普通話表達思想方式往往有很大的不同。
他說：“對於與李登輝同樣以日語為母語，後來入學或是成人以後才真正學習普通話的人來說，他們基本上已經習慣以日語思考、以日語傳達真實的想法，普通話是說場面話用的。他們用日語學習哲學、文學、法律、政治、經濟、理工、醫學等科目，所以思維方式符合日本人的邏輯結構，用日語交談自然容易被日本人理解。另一方面也是因為對日本的熟悉與信任 ....
