West Dayton Stories: An Immense And Defiant Joy

Listen • 4:07
We’ve been reflecting on Black Joy on West Dayton Stories and our final commentary on the topic is from amaha sellassie.
When I think of joy, Black Joy, I often reminisce about that phrase: “Don’t let them steal your joy! They take so much from us, but never let them steal your joy”. Some may ask, why Black Joy and not just joy? For me Black Joy is my space of resistance, it is my medicine for navigating a world that is often anti-Black, a space I create in the midst of turmoil to protect my health. I appreciate how scholar Imani Perry describes it: “Joy is not found in the absence of pain and suffering. It exists through it…Blackness is an immense and defiant joy.” For me Black Joy is a liberatory act that transcends the trauma of exclusion that Black bodies experience as we traverse spaces marked as white. I find Black Joy in the self-determining freedom of no longer catering to a white imagination dictating how I should ....

West Dayton Stories: Stillness…to Joy

/
Our community producers have been considering the notion of Black Joy on West Dayton Stories, and this week, Tiffany Brown uses the performance art of spoken word poetry in her piece, “Stillness…to Joy”.
Our ancestor Ossie Davis spoke of a thing called Black Joy, saying, “I find in being black a thing of beauty, a joy, a strength, a secret cup of gladness,” but sometimes y’all, being Black feels like a rolling sea of sadness. From waves of water cresting on high, like when a mother hears her baby s first beautiful cry, to crashing low like a mother s tears flowing with the saltiness of knowing her child s life was cut short and his precious dreams stolen. ....

West Dayton Stories: Spirit, Pride And Black Joy

/
We’re exploring Black Joy on West Dayton Stories, and this week community producer Omopé Carter-Daboiku, known to many as Mama O, tells of a lifetime of dipping into that deep well of spirit and pride.
As a child I was taught that joy expressed externally, except church or a sporting event, was pretentious and dangerous. Anyone who despised you would steal your joy: take your body without your permission, sell or hospitalize your child, put you in debt and steal your land, or just plain whip you for smiling and skipping.
However, I suspect those kidnapped Africans experienced some sense of joy when finally reaching land and were not eaten by the ....

West Dayton Stories: A Testimony Of Black Joy

Listen • 3:18
In this week s edition of West Dayton Stories community producer Jaylon Yates uses lyrical language and poetic imagery to express his take on Black Joy.
Black. Of the darkest colors owing to absence of or complete absorption of light.
Absence. Some say blacks are absent time, knowledge, or even joy. Absent of opportunity, because he’s the darkest. “Sir you must work the hardest because you’re the darkest.” They simply lack because they’re associated with black. If a tree falls in a forest and no is around to hear, does it make a sound?
Joy. A feeling of great pleasure and happiness. Somewhere in that same forest you’ll find joy. That same place no one wants to go, there s unconditional love. Smiles of a sun being, where the sun comes and never leaves. Complete absorption of light, a body fit enough to do the earth’s bidding; for the world may not have known light if it wasn t for darkness. ....

West Dayton Stories: The Joy Of Celebrating Black Trans Excellence

Listen • 4:33
Here on West Dayton Stories, we’re exploring the concept of Black Joy. With so much focus on the trauma of race in America, we turn to this important source of celebration, resistance, and healing. Community producer LB, who’s also known as Leah Byrd, takes us back to the time he found the joy he didn’t know he needed in his life.
I grew up going to a predominantly white Catholic school. I spent 13 years there and somehow, still turned out as Black and gay and trans, as I am.
But anyways, because of this upbringing at school and being raised at home by predominantly the white side of my family, I had a disconnect with my identity. I was in denial of this disconnect with my identity until a Black professor pointed out my internalized anti-Blackness for the first time when I was an undergrad. This professor also recommended that I submit my thesis project to the BlackStar Film Festival, which I did. And to my surprise, my web s ....
