West Nova MP Chris d Entremont The MP for West Nova is concerned tensions could rise in St. Mary’s Bay this summer. Chris d’Entremont recently sent a letter to Fisheries Minister Bernadette Jordan, calling for DFO to increase consultations with commercial and Indigenous fishers. This after last fall’s violence over an out of season ‘moderate livelihood fishery,’ run by the Sipekne’katik First Nation. The band is planning to launch a self-regulated fishery on June 1st. d’Entremont says the Department of Fisheries and Oceans have been too quiet on the issue. “We have a number of groups that are apparently not being consulted. There are a number of concerns, and we don’t want a repeat of last year. So we’re reaching out to the Minister to find out, what’s the plan?” Said d’Entremont. ....
HALIFAX Director Phil Comeau says he s surprised to see how connected the descendants of Acadian settlers are to their heritage no matter where they live on this earth. It always amazes me how people in the diaspora can still feel part of a culture even if we ve been separated for 250 years, Comeau said in a recent interview. His 2019 documentary Belle-Ile in Acadie follows a pilgrimage of Acadians from Belle-Ile-en-Mer in Brittany, France, to the Maritime provinces for the Acadian World Congress, a festival of Acadian culture held every five years. Comeau, an Acadian born in Nova Scotia, said he wanted to explore themes of heritage and belonging in his most recent documentary, a pairing to his previous film about an Acadian gathering in France. ....
