Populous to use repurposed aircraft fuselages in French stadium renovation

The scheme will repurpose the fuselages of decommissioned Airbus A340 aircraft as sunshades
Stadium specialist Populous has landed the role of lead architect on a €100m renovation of a football stadium in France which will include the use of repurposed jet airliners.
The practice, which designed the London Stadium for the 2012 Olympics, will install sections of the fuselages of decommissioned Airbus A340 aircraft as sunshades at the Stade de la Meinau in Strasbourg.

Peter O. Vandervoort, longtime U. of C. astrophysicist and Hyde Parker, is dead at 85

Peter Oliver Vandervoort, an astrophysicist at the University of Chicago who kept alive the memory of the Manhattan Project and a generation of famous scientists, died on Dec. 11 at the age of 85.Â
Vandervoort was born in Detroit on April 25, 1935. His father joined the military shortly after he was born, and he grew up an Army brat, having attended 15 different schools by the time he was 15 years old, including a two-year spell in post-war Germany.Â
After his fatherâs failed stint as a car salesman in Minerva, Ohio, the family moved to Chicago. Vandervoort was set to attend South Shore High School, but an old math teacher from Minerva encouraged him to apply to the U. of C.âs early admissions program under then-President Robert Maynard Hutchins, which allowed students to attend the university at the age of 16.Â ....

Alum’s career at University spanned 70 years, impacted generations of students
Prof. Emeritus Peter O. Vandervoort, an astrophysicist who was trained by legendary scientists at the University of Chicago and spent his career mentoring hundreds of students, colleagues and the public, died Dec. 11. He was 85.
Part of the UChicago community for nearly seven decades, Vandervoort, AB’54, SB’55, SM’56, PhD’60, was remembered by colleagues as the resident historian of the Department of Astronomy & Astrophysics and a lifelong champion for the University.
“In many ways, Peter was the embodiment of the history and culture in the astronomy department, but I also thought of him as embodying the ideals of the University,” said Prof. Richard Kron, a longtime friend and colleague in the department. “He valued your opinion regardless of whether he disagreed, and he had the utmost respect for everyone as human beings and as participants in this academ ....
