Boulder City Council Gives Initial Okay to New Homeless Proposals


“The current staff are really impacted by this work, partly because there’s not enough resources to do it all,” Kurt Firnhaber, director of the city’s Housing and Human Services department, told council members during the study session on April 27.
The other three proposals, which weren’t universally supported but were ultimately approved, included creating a pilot ambassador program that would provide more “eyes on the ground” for law enforcement; funding two unarmed park rangers to help police public spaces and issue citations; and adding six specially trained police officers to support both teams and to be present during encampment clearings. ....

A year after passing a sweeping police accountability bill with bipartisan support, it s a very different climate for criminal justice reform at the Capitol this year.
Amid a flurry of police brutality protests in the wake of George Floyd’s murder, criminal justice reform advocates at the Colorado legislature seized the moment last summer and passed one of the most sweeping police reform laws in the country. 
Advocates and lawmakers hoped to nudge those efforts forward this year  introducing a series of criminal justice bills that could further overhaul how police officers do their jobs, liberalize laws on when people have to go to jail and make it easier to let people out of prison.  ....

Accused Colorado Mass Shooter Faces Additional Charges
Prosecutors on Wednesday charged a 21-year-old man accused of fatally shooting 10 people at a Boulder, Colorado, supermarket last month with nearly four dozen additional counts of attempted murder, assault, and weapons offenses, court documents showed.
Ahmad Al Aliwi Alissa was already charged with 10 counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder stemming from the March 22 shooting rampage at the King Soopers grocery store in Boulder, about 28 miles northwest of Denver.
Alissa surrendered to law enforcement officers at the crime scene, about two miles from the University of Colorado’s flagship campus, after he was wounded in an exchange of gunfire with police, authorities said. ....
