While Bundaberg beaches have not recorded a fatal shark attack, nearly a century ago, one young local lost his life while visiting Pialba.
Cordalba s Alfred J Gassman was just 19-year-old when a shark tore out almost the whole of his right side from the armpit to the thigh, and as deep as the spine , the
Maryborough Chronicle reported at the time.
The incident reportedly happened at 9.15am on December 5, 1922, between Scarness and Torquay, when Mr Gassman went to bathe with Messrs Oscar Bonney, of Gympie, Douglas Pothecary (an uncle of deceased) and Vincent Thomas Sittell.
