(U of A System Division of Agriculture photo by Mary Hightower) FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. â A week of record-low temperatures may leave its mark on Arkansasâ fire ant populations, but donât look for the cold to have reduced fly or tick numbers, Kelly Loftin, extension entomologist for the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture, said Friday. In general, Loftin said that âinsects that are endemic to our region have evolved various mechanisms to survive cold winters.â However, invasives that originate from warmer climates donât have those means for survival. ....

There are some things that, even when you know it’s coming, no one’s happy when it gets here. On Monday, Tom Barber, extension weed scientist for the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture, announced that he and several fellow researchers had confirmed a strain of glufosinate-resistant Palmer amaranth commonly known as pigweed in Mississippi County. Glufosinate, an herbicide marketed under the name Liberty, is one of the few remaining chemistries that are effective in controlling pigweed in soybeans and other crops. ....
