SAMPLER: Marlborough librarian passes away Mary Wenzel For years, I have been wishing Mena Hedin a happy birthday on Feb. 19, but this year my heart offers sympathy to her family and friends as Mena passed away on Jan. 14, 2021, at the age of 83. Mena was a familiar face at the Marlborough Public Library from 1953 to 2012 when she retired after 59 years. Mena worked in both the Adult Room and Children’s Room, telling tales at the Children’s Story Hour to many generations of families. “She was always smiling,” reminisced Cathy Miola of Marlborough. “I can’t remember how many Story Hours with Mena that I listened to with my three children.” ....
SAMPLER: Blessing held at Fort Meadow Reservoir Mary Wenzel The annual outdoor Blessing of the Waters took place recently with the Rev. Gregory Nicholas Christakos of the Sts. Anargyroi Greek Orthodox Church in Marlborough. The event took place at the Bolton Street Tavern which is situated next to the Fort Meadow Reservoir. Mary Wenzel Students from the Marlborough High School’s Business Professionals of America held a food drive for the Marlborough food bank. Those assisting with the collection for the Marlborough Community Cupboard included Ryan Dudek, Camden Ginnetti, Finola McCarthy, Sarah Cronin, Mia Collins, Anna Katsis, Sophie Cappadona and Amelia Carlman. THE MARLBOROUGH/HUDSON GIRL SCOUTS will be hosting a Giving from the Heart Housewares and Linen Collection at Fresh Start Furniture Bank 16 Brent Drive, Hudson. This no-contact collection for Fresh Start will be held from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Feb. 6. Traditionally, for the last eight years, the Girl Scouts have hosted a Collection in honor of Martin Luther’s King Jr.’s birthday. One of the missions of Girl Scouts is to take action and make the world a better place. SAMPLER: Police department adds 4 officers Mary Wenzel The Marlborough Police Department has announced the hiring of four new police officers. Officers John Creed, Lamar Edmonds, Nathan Kuffrey and Samantha Maciel were separately sworn in at the Marlborough Police Department. City Clerk Steven Kerrigan administered the oath of office as family and colleagues looked on. Also, in attendance were Marlborough Mayor Arthur Vigeant and Marlborough Police Chief David Giorgi. The new officers will now begin an extensive 12-week field training program with the patrol division. Congratulations to all and best of luck. POORVI MOHANAKRISHNAN, a 10th-grade student at the Advanced Math & Science Academy Charter School, won the local Marlborough Lions Club level of the Massachusetts Lions Youth Speech Competition on Dec. 16, 2019. Mary Wenzel The Sweats for Vets organization met its goal for the year 2020 by collecting and distributing 2,100 sweatshirts to homeless veterans in the New England/New York area. Homeless veterans all over New England were gifted with Boston sports team hooded sweatshirts for Christmas. Some 40 organizations participated in the Marlborough-based Sweats for Vets efforts including the St. Stephen Lutheran Church, the Marlborough Junior Woman’s Club, the Rotary Club of Marlborough and others. The founder of Sweats for Vets, Mark Vital, started this mission with the belief that a sweatshirt from a New England based team brings more than just warmth but also pride and hope to a homeless veteran. ....
