MINNEAPOLIS (AP) Former US vice president Walter F. Mondale, a liberal icon who lost the most lopsided presidential election after bluntly telling voters to expect a tax increase if he won, died Monday. He was 93.
The death of the former senator, ambassador and Minnesota attorney general was announced in a statement from his family. No cause was cited.
Mondale followed the trail blazed by his political mentor, Hubert H. Humphrey, from Minnesota politics to the US Senate and the vice presidency, serving under Jimmy Carter from 1977 to 1981. ....

Self-pardon? It might not go how Trump thinks.

Self-pardon? It might not go how Trump thinks.
The president s cherished Supreme Court majority has disappointed him before and it might again.
President Donald Trump’s lawyers might also balk at writing up a pardon for him, especially if he seeks to sweep in his conduct in advance of and during the violent assault on the Capitol last week. | Alex Brandon/AP Photo

An unprecedented move by President Donald Trump to grant himself a pardon during his remaining days in office could divide his handpicked Supreme Court majority.
Court-watchers are bracing for an epic, intra-Federalist Society clash that could determine whether Trump and future presidents can declare themselves immune from criminal investigations even after leaving the White House. ....
