A mural is nice, but Syracuse has more pressing needs (Editorial Board Opinion)

A mural is nice, but Syracuse has more pressing needs (Editorial Board Opinion) Today 7:00 AM The mural proposed for a building on East Washington Street, near Columbus Circle, will feature four of the city’s most significant basketball stars: Breanna Stewart, Earl Lloyd Jr., Dolph Schayes, and Manny Breland. Facebook Share Critics of the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan passed by Congress in March warned that state and local governments couldn’t be trusted to wisely spend billions in federal Covid-19 relief. The Syracuse Common Council seems determined to prove them right. We like public art (and basketball) as much as anyone, but a mural is just about the last thing we’d buy with the $123 million windfall coming from Washington.

Ending domestic violence begins with men standing up against it (Editorial Board Opinion)

Ending domestic violence begins with men standing up against it (Editorial Board Opinion) Posted May 09, 2021 Syracuse attack Chase Scanlan (22) and Syracuse attack Stephen Rehfuss (29) celebrate a goal vs. Holy Cross at the Carrier Dome, Syracuse, N.Y., Saturday March 20, 2021. Rehfuss was among the leaders of the lacrosse team who protested Scanlan s reinstatement after an alleged domestic violence incident. Facebook Share In our “winning isn’t everything, it’s the only thing” culture, it is heartening to see the Syracuse University men’s lacrosse team take a public stand by refusing to play with a teammate linked to domestic violence. Last week, players Drake Porter, Stephen Rehfuss, Owen Hiltz, Jamie Trimboli and Danny Varello (among others) turned their on-field protest into a teaching moment for their coach, their university, the lacrosse community and all of us. They pledged:

We’re proud of local reporting that gets results (Editorial Board Opinion) Today 7:00 AM Syracuse’s # 22 Chase Scanlan works on Stony Brooks #2 Connor Grippe and gets his shot in a game played at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, N.Y. March 11, 2021. Syracuse University would not say why Scanlan was suspended, citing privacy laws. Syracuse.com s reporting connected it to a domestic violence call to police. Facebook Share If you think the editorial board is more frequently tooting the horn for local journalism, you’re not wrong. We are making the case for the value of our work to subscribers and the community. We also are standing up for the role played by a free and independent press in a democracy, in the face of growing hostility to it.

Sheriff Conway has no more excuses for not buying body cameras (Editorial)

Sheriff Conway has no more excuses for not buying body cameras (Editorial) Today 7:00 AM The national movement for police accountability finally reached the Onondaga County sheriff’s department on Friday. In the morning, Sheriff Eugene Conway said he would implement a body-worn camera program if county government pays for it. By afternoon, the county executive and legislature chairman promised to appropriate the money. The sheriff got to the correct result. We wish we didn’t have to drag him there. The sheriff proposed a body cam pilot program in 2017. It was not funded, and he did not bring it up again. Since that time, the trust gap between police and the public has only gotten wider. The conviction of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin in the murder of George Floyd proved the value of video evidence shot by a bystander, Darnella Frazier. The public should not have to depend on a teenager with a smartphone to capture video evidence of police misconduct.
