Military, Hancock were wrong to keep Reaper drone crash a secret (Editorial) Updated 7:30 AM; Today 7:30 AM An MQ-9 Reaper drone operated by the NY Air National Guard s 174th Attack Wing is shown after crashing June 25, 2020 at Syracuse Hancock International Airport.U.S. Air Force photo Facebook Share The 174th Attack Wing at Hancock Field routinely flies remote-controlled MQ-9 Reaper drones over our homes, schools, businesses, roads and lakes. When a drone crashes, it’s more than an embarrassment to the military. It’s a matter of public concern. It’s dismaying that we’re only learning now about a Reaper that crashed June 25, 2020, on takeoff from Hancock Airport. Neither the 174th nor the Syracuse Regional Airport Authority, which operates the airport on the public’s behalf, saw fit to alert the public about the accident. That’s wrong.

Albany shouldn’t raise taxes when it’s rolling in federal dough (Editorial) Updated Apr 11, 2021; Posted Apr 11, 2021 Members of the New York Assembly debate budget bills during a legislative session in the Assembly Chamber at the state Capitol, Wednesday, April 7, 2021, in Albany, N.Y. AP Facebook Share New York state took a beating from the coronavirus. The record-setting $212 billion state budget enacted last week, fattened with billions in federal relief, will go a long way to repairing the damage to education, small businesses, restaurants, the arts, renters, landlords and local governments. A once-a-century pandemic merits a robust response. A 10% increase in spending, some of it based on one-shot revenues from the feds, is not sustainable.

Enough is enough Regulators must crack down on Pontiac Nursing Home (Editorial)

Enough is enough. Regulators must crack down on Pontiac Nursing Home (Editorial) Updated Mar 14, 2021; Facebook Share Pontiac Nursing Home, in Oswego, has a long and well-earned reputation for negligent treatment of its residents. New horrors reported by Syracuse.com’s James T. Mulder are a clarion call to state and federal regulators to act decisively and forcefully against the home now. You remember Pontiac: the place where the roof leaked rain and snowmelt into patient rooms; where sexual abuse of a dementia patient by a registered sex offender was not reported to authorities; where two seriously ill residents died because the nursing home waited too long to get them to the hospital.

Sheriff Conway, stand up and face questions on teen’s shooting by police (Editorial) Syracuse.com 3/11/2021 Advance Media NY Editorial Board, syracuse.com Onondaga County Sheriff Eugene Conway has been elected twice to that office. He needs to answer to the public more than every four years. Now would be a good time. Conway’s department was part of a law enforcement contingent responding March 4 to a call from a Jamesville family about their teenage son’s mental health crisis. The incident ended with 17-year-old Judson Albahm dead of multiple gunshots, after officers said the teen pointed what looked like a gun at them. It turned out to be an air gun.
