Republicans across the country reportedly fled the party in the days following the riot at the U.S. Capitol that led to the second impeachment of former President Donald Trump.

In fact, the number of registered Republicans in the Garden State actually crept up by 355, or 0.02% between Jan. 1 and Feb. 1, while the number of Democrats declined. However, the statewide totals are skewed by a general cleanup of the voter rolls in Union County, which is predominantly Democratic. Excluding Union from the total, Republican registration rose by 0.23%, while the ranks of Democrats increased by a higher 0.35%. ....

FLEMINGTON, NJ - Nearly one month after the Jan. 6 “Stop the Steal” rally and ensuing attack at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., and with almost a full month of points aired for and against Hunterdon County Board of Commissioners Director Susan Soloway’s attendance at the rally, outcry on both sides of the political aisle took up a sizable portion of the biweekly meeting.
On Tuesday, most of the 80 minutes spent on public comments revisited ideas county residents first noted during the Jan. 19 regarding both her freedom of speech and her judgment in attending the rally and leaving before the move to the Capitol. ....

Hardware, software bugs derail NJ push for early voting

Officials across New Jersey agree that 2020’s mostly mail-in election the biggest and most complex in state history was also the most successful, as 4.5 million people voted safely in the midst of a public-health crisis.
Lawmakers had hoped to build on that success by moving quickly with a plan that would bring early in-person voting to New Jersey as soon as this year’s gubernatorial primary, scheduled for June 8.  Early voting already takes place in more than half the states, but for now the bill is stalled.
To make early voting happen, New Jersey needs to update its voter registration system. That system is a complex web of computer servers and software linking all 21 counties with agencies in Trenton, including the division of elections, Motor Vehicle Commission and central offices for state courts, corrections and human services. It’s supposed to keep accurate track of registered voters and their addresses. ....
