According to the Vendidad, Zoroastrianism has a unique system of disposal of the dead – dokhmenishini – because cremation pollutes fire, which is considered sacred, and burial is unhygienic. In ancient Iran, the bodies were left on hilltops in pits so that they could be devoured by wild animals or scavenging birds. In the 1940s, the Iranian monarch, Reza Shah, banned this method of disposing of the dead, but in India, Parsis still cling to this tradition in towns that have dakhmas. ....

«احسان یارشاطر» متولد ۱۲فروردین۱۲۹۹ در همدان، بنیان‌گذار و سرویراستار دانشنامه ایرانیکا، بنیان‌گذار مرکز مطالعات ایران‌شناسی و استاد مطالعات ایرانی در دانشگاه کلمبیا در نیویورک بود.
یارشاطر در خانواده‌‏ای بهایی در همدان متولد شد. نام پدرش «هاشم» بود و بیشتر اوقات خود را صرف امور مذهبی ‌می‌کرد و مادرش «روحانیه میثاقیه» در زمان خود زنی مترقی بود. او سال اول و دوم دبستان را در دبستان‌های «آلیانس» یهودیان و «تایید» همدان گذراند. خانواده‌اش در سال ۱۳۰۵ به کرمانشاه و سپس به تهران نقل مکان کردند و او باقی تحصیلات مقدماتی‌ خود ر ....
