After four-and-a-half years leading the Houston Police Department, Art Acevedo has stepped down to take the role of top cop in Miami. Longtime HPD officer Troy Finner is the current chief. Ahead of Finner s swearing-in ceremony, Acevedo removed his badge and pinned it onto Finner s uniform.
In recent months, five of the largest cities in Texas have seen their top cop leave. The reasons for their exits are varied. But one thing is known: The average tenure for some big-city chiefs in Texas is in decline.
Troy Finner, a 30-year veteran of the Houston Police Department, became HPD’s new leader this April. That makes Finner the fourth new big-city police chief appointed in Texas since January. Finner was preceded by Al Jones in Arlington, Eddie Garcia in Dallas and Neil Noakes in Fort Worth. ....
