NORFOLK, Va. A big step Thursday is by no means the last step in the larger story of marijuana legalization. 
“Today is legalization, but it doesn’t help anyone in my project, said Tamara Netzel, who tells stories through her photography project Cruel Consequences: Portraits of Misguided Law.
The photographs tell the stories of the struggles some Virginians face living with marijuana charges on their criminal records. Virginia’s new marijuana laws do not include expungement of all charges, meaning Thursday is just another weekday void of fanfare for many Virginians.  ....

RICHMOND, Va. Virginia could soon become the first state in the South to legalize marijuana. 
Lawmakers are currently debating new proposed legislation in the General Assembly session.

Va. marijuana legalization advances with later start


Landmark legislation that would make Virginia the first state in the South to legalize marijuana is heading toward its first full votes before the House and Senate this week.
And while the proposal has garnered consistent — and in some cases bipartisan — support, significant debate remains on key details of the proposal, including when and how criminal penalties should be rolled back as the state begins working to establish a legal marketplace for the drug.
Lawmakers and advocates said the question became even more important last week as the legislation was amended in both the House and Senate to push the start of retail sales to Jan. 1, 2024, a full year later than the 2023 date proposed by Gov. Ralph Northam. ....

Virginia s legislature is slated to adjourn in two weeks, and marijuana legalization has hit roadblocks in both chambers due to the sheer length of the bills.
The growing movement to legalize marijuana is eyeing its first real foothold in the Old South.
