Oxford's Lord Mayor walks a whopping 27 miles in one day of campaigning


AS candidates gathered to hear the results of Oxford s electoral contest, another competition was playing out in the halls of power.
The amount of shoe leather used by candidates as they wandered the city s streets stacked up quickly over a short period of time this year.
Election canvassing was only allowed from mid-March as Covid restrictions eased, meaning all political parties and independents had to make short work of campaigning work that would usually take place over a year.
Mark Lygo, Oxford s Lord Mayor, now re-elected as a Labour councillor for Churchill Ward, said he had walked 27 miles on polling day in a last-minute blitz for votes. ....

Labour wins majority in Oxford City Council election


LABOUR maintained its overall control of Oxford City Council after the votes were counted on Saturday night.
A long day of vote counting, beginning at 10am and ending at 8pm resulted in 34 seats on the council for the Labour Party.
The Lib Dems won nine seats; the Greens won three, gaining a seat on their numbers in the previous council, and two independents, Mick Haines in Marston and Saj Malik in Cowley Marsh, were also elected.
Susan Brown, who will return as leader of the council, said: I am grateful to the people of Oxford who have shown their confidence in our Labour council. ....

Costa, Caffe Nero and Turtle Bay want outdoor dining in Oxford

COSTA Coffee, Caffe Nero and Turtle Bay are among the high street names joining Oxford s local businesses in hopes of setting up alfresco dining as Covid restrictions ease.
The chain restaurants and cafes join local names like Jericho Coffee Traders on the High Street, and Viny s Cafe on North Parade who have made applications for a pavement licence to Oxford City Council.
A total of eight pavement licence applications are listed on the city council s website from the last month alone since March 24.
If approved, it would mean more hospitality businesses could join the ranks of those who have set up European town square-style dining or makeshift beer gardens on closed roads in Oxford. ....
