Julia Hatmaker Funded by the Mayors Challenge Fund, the £4.8m proposed walk and cycle path is designed by Planit-IE on behalf of the Bridgewater Canal Company, which is owned by Peel L&P. The path will allow walkers and cyclists to travel over the Manchester Ship Canal between Salford and Trafford without encountering traffic. Currently, they must go across Barton Road Bridge, which has a narrow carriageway. Once construction is complete, it will link up two key parts of the Bridgewater Way, providing a continuous traffic-free 20-mile route between Wigan, Salford, Castlefield, Trafford and Altrincham. “There have been ambitions to deliver improvements to Barton Aqueduct and reinstate the elevated walkway for a number of years,” said Peter Parkinson, director of the Bridgewater Canal. “Following a public consultation, we’re thrilled to be bringing the plans forward to improve the area for walkers, runners and cyclists.” ....
Liverpool Street Corridor is set to benefit from a £3.1 million boost for walkers and cyclists. Salford City Mayor Paul Dennett made the decision to award the contract at the Procurement meeting on 6th January. It will see improved routes for walkers and include segregated cycle lanes for those on bikes. The overall project is valued at £3,106,170.70, comprising of £2,500,000 of Growth Deal 2 funding, £100,000 of Local Match and £506,170.70 of Mayors Challenge Fund (MCF). Salford City Mayor Paul Dennett said: “It is great news to be able to formally approve the contact for the Liverpool Street Corridor and improve transport options for our residents. Liverpool Street lies between Albion Way and Oldfield Road and is one of the three key transport routes into the city centre from the west. ....
