South Glengarry cuts taxes by 3.24 per cent

SOUTH GLENGARRY, Ontario – The Council for the Township of South Glengarry passed a 3.24 per cent residential tax cut at their meeting on Tuesday, April 6.
“We (Council) are proud to be in a position to be able to decrease the levy requirement in response to COVID-19. The health and wellbeing of South Glengarry residents is always a priority”, said Mayor Frank Prevost in a statement sent to media.
Township staff worked with Council in November of 2020 on the 2021 municipal budget and found that they were able to economize $290,000 worth of savings from the previous year. ....

COMMENTARY: Walk before you run with Peanut Line

South Glengarry has owned the Peanut Line, a 31 kilometer recreational trail through the municipality between Cornwall and Quebec, for 12 years now. The township has put the bare minimum into upkeep on the trail to a point where Mayor Frank Prevost said he was “very disappointed and was kind of disgusted” with the state of the Peanut Line during a November budget meeting.
One would logically think you would put money into fixing it up. But now there’s a plan to burn $40,000 of taxpayer money to hire a consultant and come up with a grandiose holistic trail plan to turn the trail into a tourist destination and to figure out exactly what to do with the trail. ....

LANCASTER – After 29 years with the Township of South Glengarry, the general manager of infrastructure services has taken part in his final council meeting.
Ewen MacDonald started as a roads superintendent in 1992 and then became public works director in 1999 after amalgamation. He was also a director on the board of Ontario Good Roads Association for number of years.
“I have had the pleasure of working with Ewen for 25 years of this working career and I can honestly say I will certainly miss having your around the township office,” Mayor Frank Prevost said during a retirement presentation on Tuesday night (Feb. 16). ....
