Louis Kahn: A Memoir

© 2021
Simone Withers Swan
The memorable moments began in 1967. I was living in Manhattan when the New York State Council on the Arts, one of my clients, assigned me to write up the booklet for its first annual awards of which Louis Kahn was a recipient. I chose to investigate Kahn first. He was my hero in the contemporary world of architecture. Kahn was the star with students and faculty at Columbia University’s architecture school where I used to lurk and later lectured on Hassan Fathy. It was with intense anticipation that I traveled from Pennsylvania Station to Philadelphia to meet the grand architect for the very first time. At the 4th Street station, a rush of childhood memories came ....

Philadelphia Has a Long History of Fights Over Criminal Justice Reform | Blog | Independent Lens

By Kristal Sotomayor
In order to understand the rich history of criminal reform work, up through the vivid stories of crime and punishment presented in the docuseries
Philly D.A., it is important to recognize Philadelphia’s origin story, as it were. This is by no means meant to reflect the entirety of Philadelphia’s complex history around criminal justice, but think of it as a primer on pivotal moments that lead to where we are now.
First, we’ll go
Philadelphia Political Activism Goes Way Back
The territory currently known as Philadelphia is on the ancestral land of the Lenni-Lenape indigenous people. It is estimated that the Lenape people occupied the area for almost 10,000 years prior to European colonization. In 1681, William Penn was granted a charter by King Charles II of England to colonize the land and form the colony of Pennsylvania. A year later, Penn arrived in what would become Philadelphia, and in 1683, the Lenape people signed their first t ....

40 Years a Prisoner Unearths a Little-Told History of Police Violence in Philadelphia

Save this story for later.
Mike Africa Jr. met his parents in prison. In fact, he was born in a cell. For most of his life, he did all he could to get his mother,
Debbie Africa, and father,
Mike Africa Sr., released. A new documentary,
40 Years a Prisoner, available on HBO now, follows his journey fighting his parents’ incarceration and rigorously examines the sordid history of law enforcement practices like the ones that landed them there in the first place.
Like Africa Jr., director
Tommy Oliver grew up in Philadelphia, hearing rumblings about MOVE the back-to-the-land Black anarchist group Africa Jr.’s parents were core members of. (While the name is capitalized, it’s not an acronym.) It wasn’t until Oliver began doing his own research on MOVE that a much bigger story began to reveal itself. “I watched everything I could. And then I went to the Temple [University] Urban Archives, and I went through dozens of boxes of content,” Oliver told ....

COVID, BLM, Trump vs. Biden: History will remember 2020

It’s not easy to recognize important historical moments while they’re happening.
But 2020 has been a year marked by disaster and debacle. It has featured a deadly global pandemic, a reckoning over racism in the wake of several Black Americans killed by police, and a tense, litigious election.
Looking back, historians, political insiders, and on-the-ground organizers agree that the last 12 months or so will leave an indelible impression.
“I don’t know a historian right now who isn’t still kind of in shock,” said Timothy Lombardo, a Philadelphia-born historian of conservative politics.
Lombardo, who is now a professor at the University of South Alabama, is careful to note it’s impossible to predict how the future will remember the present too many moving parts and extenuating factors. However, it’s possible to take cues from the past. ....
