LAKEWOOD, Ohio Exactly two years after first introducing an ordinance to provide paid parental leave benefits to the city’s full-time employees as a councilwoman, Mayor Meghan George is hoping City Council passes the legislation, which was reintroduced on Tuesday (Jan. 19).
“While initially discussed at the time, I really couldn’t get a lot of traction from the prior administration or council,” said George, who, before becoming mayor, worked in the healthcare industry as a benefits consultant.
“I knew once I became mayor I wanted to reintroduce this benefit, because it’s been a long passion of mine.” ....

Lakewood Fire Departments recently purchased used rescue pumper truck will be based at fire station No. 1 on Madison Avenue.
LAKEWOOD, Ohio In a cost-saving move that also provides a compact feature relatively speaking for a fire department vehicle Lakewood recently spent $250,000 to purchase a used 2010 Pierce Velocity rescue pumper truck.
“Our 1997 heavy rescue vehicle, which we originally purchased used several years ago, was due for replacement, so we approached the city with a cost-saving alternative,” Lakewood Fire Marshall Ryan Fairbanks said. “We were able to purchase the used vehicle at a third of the cost of a brand-new one. ....

LAKEWOOD, Ohio City Council recently agreed to a land lease with lakefront property owners looking to protect their land from continued Lake Erie erosion.
City Engineer Mark K. Papke said the land lease covers 6,000 square feet into Lake Erie for two next-door neighbors seeking to install riprap erosion protection.
“According to ODNR permitting, they have to get a resolution from the city basically stating that land was free and clear and able to be used for erosion protection,” Papke said.
“They’re making sure that the city doesn’t have any interest in that land for any of our projects if we had any infrastructure there. It’s like a checks and balances making sure that the city is OK with them getting a submerged land lease for that area.” ....

LAKEWOOD, Ohio Exactly a year after Lakewood’s new online public records portal went live, the city has received the Ohio auditor’s highest rating for open and transparent government.
“Open and transparent government has been a priority since I started on council,” Mayor Meghan George said. “Councilman (Tristan) Rader and I worked hard on this initiative.
“It’s good to see our hard work paying off, with the auditor of state recognizing Lakewood’s open process for public record requests. My administration will continue to explore ways to promote openness and transparency,” she said. ....
