It could be any day now that the region will know who the new mayor of Rockhampton is. As of Wednesday afternoon 81.16 per cent of the vote has been counted with 45,359 tallied out of 55,885 registered voters. But with close to 2000 postal votes outstanding, counting has slowed. Sitting councillor Tony Williams remains in the lead with 10,980 votes, accounting for 24.85 per cent. Russell Claus is next in line with 15.55 per cent of the vote from 6,873 votes. Chris Pineapple Hooper is coming third with 12.29 per cent of the vote, gaining 5,429 votes. According to Electoral Commission of Queensland data, 1828 postal votes are outstanding, which has slowed vote counting over the past few days. ....
Date Time Rain opens barrage gates and brings hyacinth The recent rainfall in the upstream catchment has filled the Fitzroy River Barrage and brought aquatic weeds to the area. Over the weekend the Barrage storage level increased by 10% to reach 100% capacity, allowing the gates to open and water to flow through. Acting Mayor Neil Fisher said this was great news for the Region. “Once again, the mighty Fitzroy River demonstrates its incredible reliability by filling our Barrage storage for another year to ensure that the community has an adequate water supply to meet its needs,” said Acting Mayor Fisher. “Rockhampton is truly very fortunate to have such a reliable river system to support its future growth and development. The full Barrage storage means that there is sufficient water to last the community at least another 18 months without further significant inflows.” ....
Date Time Gracemere’s paradise to get even better One of the region’s most beautiful spots is set for an upgrade, with work beginning today on $1.35m of improvements for a Touch of Paradise in Gracemere’s Cedric Archer Park. Acting Mayor Neil Fisher said this work would elevate Touch of Paradise to a whole new level. “Over the past couple of years we have transformed this little corner of Gracemere by reshaping the lagoon, installing new pathways, and building a new 43 metre pedestrian bridge. “The works we are starting now will pull all of these improvements together by repairing old footpaths, installing new shade structures, replacing seats and benches, and planting thousands of new trees and shrubs which will enhance the existing canopy. ....

This year 18 people finished the program, securing qualifications in business administration, horticulture, carpentry, mechanics, and electrical. A special graduation ceremony was held at City Hall yesterday, were the achievements of this year’s trainees and apprentices were celebrated by the council. Acting Mayor Neil Fisher congratulated the graduates. “You should all be very proud of your achievements and I hope the connections you have made and the experiences you have gained will be with you well into the future,” he said. ....
