The challenge of parking in downtown Lewes isn’t limited to the metered areas. For several months, the downtown business district parking committee has been brainstorming ways to encourage use of free parking areas just a bit farther from the business district. Ideas include reconfiguring and beautifying the stoned parking lot at the corner of Schley Avenue and Franklin Avenue. The lot is along the Lewes-to-Georgetown Trail about a quarter-mile from Second Street. From the lot, it’s a straight walk to Kings Highway and Zwaanendael Park. From there, Second Street is a block away. There have been several issues raised about why the parking lot is underutilized. Besides the desire to park in front of the shop or restaurant a visitor wants to patronize, committee members have determined the lot’s appearance is problematic. For years, the lot has been used as a staging area for various construction projects, and it’s often filled with heavy equipment. ....
Thursday, January 14, 2021 More than 65 people stood in silent vigil for about a half-hour Jan. 10 along Savannah Road in Lewes. The masked group stood in two socially distanced rows, many with homemade signs, in support of democracy and the U.S. Constitution. The demonstration was held less than a week after a group of insurrectionists was unsuccessful in its attempt to stop the certification of President-elect Joe Biden’s electoral college victory at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. The vigil was organized in part by the Rev. Canon Mark Harris of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church on Second Street in Lewes. Also involved in the demonstration were members of the Southern Delaware Alliance for Racial Justice, and members of mayor and city council. ....
Lewes Deputy Mayor Bonnie Osler will not seek another term on city council. Osler, who is nearing the end of her fourth term, said it is time to step aside. “If people are thinking about running or even wondering if there’s going to be an open seat, I kind of owe it to them to give them a heads-up,” Osler said. Osler was first elected to council in 2012, shortly after moving to Lewes following a career with the federal government. Osler is stepping down, in part, because she believes in term limits. She and her spouse Brook Hedge also recently purchased a second home in New Hampshire, where they will spend more time. ....

A Lewes committee is no longer looking into encroachments on the city’s right of way on Lewes Beach streets. After spending several weeks analyzing potential obstructions, the city’s beach parking committee abruptly stopped after a majority of members raised questions about the amount of time the effort was taking and its overall purpose. “I’m a little concerned we may not have sufficient time to address all the other issues in our charge,” said Kevin McGuiness, noting the deadline to send a report to mayor and city council is Feb. 1. “The committee should not be expected to make recommendations about specific impediments that need to be removed. That is the work of the city, the staff and its council.” ....
