(WECT) - Southport Mayor Joseph Hatem announced plans Monday for the opening of several city facilities for the summer and fall of 2021. The “Steady as She Goes” campaign focuses on reinstating some outdoor programs on a limited scale and opening facilities safely including the City of Southport Visitors Center, Garrison Lawn, Indian Trail Tree meeting Hall, and City Hall from June 1, 2021. All venues will continue to follow Governor Cooper’s Executive Order and CDC/NCDHHS guidelines to create a safe environment for all citizens and visitors as they open. ....
SOUTHPORT – For the Southport City Dock, 2021 may finally be the year. In October 2016, Hurricane Matthew thrashed the L-shaped dock that extends out into the Old Yacht Basin, warping its wood, dislodging its boards and making it unstable for visitors. For more than four years, the dock and those who miss walking over its planks to get a view of the water have patiently waited for repairs to come – but all they’ve gotten is false starts. Now, as the city looks to the new year, Mayor Joseph Hatem is confident 2021 will see the dock repaired to – at least some of – its former glory. ....
