Food and organics waste to be composted in new service
The City of Melbourne is introducing a new food and organics collection service to help local residents reduce the amount of waste going to landfill.
As part of the service, residents living in houses and single-storey apartment blocks will be provided with:
A new lime-green wheelie bin for food and organic waste (120 litre)
a kitchen caddy for collecting food scraps, and
a roll of 52 compostable bin liners to help keep their new bin free of odours, which will be supplied for free on an ongoing basis.
Lord Mayor Sally Capp said more than 9000 homes will receive the initial service before the rollout continues more widely across the municipality in 2022. ....

The City of Melbourne has celebrated its first FOMO Friday , a series of activations and offers it hopes will draw workers back into the CBD.
The initiative comes in partnership with the Property Council of Australia, which has strongly pushed for workers to return to the office after a year of remote work.
Pedestrian traffic was down on average levels on Friday, Lord Mayor Sally Capp said, but she described turnout for the first of four activations as a pleasing result . ....

Melbourne’s second drug-injecting room is expected to be located in an art deco building opposite Flinders Street Station and near the popular al fresco city dining laneway, Degraves Street.
The former Yooralla building at 244-248 Flinders Street, between Elizabeth and Swanston streets, was chosen by the state government because it is located in a drug-injecting and overdose hotspot, according to sources familiar with the project, who spoke on the condition of anonymity. ....

New data from Roy Morgan Research tracking people movements across Australia’s capital cities shows that activity across Melbourne’s and Sydney’s CBDs was less than half their pre-COVID level at the end of April.
Across the smaller capitals, people movements remained less than two-thirds of their ‘normal’ level:
