Mustangs asking City of Melfort to delay removing ice at Northern Lights Palace

The City of Melfort is going to take a few days to determine what is going to happen with the ice at the Northern Lights Palace.
Originally, the city had said they wanted to shut the rink down for the season as of Feb. 15, and an official decision would be voted on at the regular council meeting on Monday, Feb. 1.
However, the Melfort Mustangs made a delegation on Monday, asking council to reconsider that decision and keep the ice in the palace for at least a few more weeks and wait on more information from the provincial government. As it stands, Mustangs head coach and general manager Trevor Blevins said he is planning on bringing back some of his 18 and under players to begin practicing again and are hoping in the future to bring the rest of his team back all under the rules provided by Sask. City to look into heavy truck route after hearing residents' concerns

After conversations began in mid-December regarding Melfort’s Heavy Truck Route, more residents are voicing their concerns over the route, mainly relating to Broadway Avenue South.
At the city’s council meeting on Monday, Jan. 11, several residents voiced their concerns about heavy duty vehicles travelling down the road.
One letter said the semi traffic going by their house on Broadway Ave. South has “dramatically increased”, over the years and that “90 per cent of the heavy trucks are grain trucks.” They added there are upwards of 50 trucks that make their way down that route on a day-to-day basis, sometimes more during harvest. The letter also stated the changes in the area since the road was deemed a Heavy Truck Route, including residential development in the ’80s. ....

Melfort discusses 2021 capital projects

The five-year general capital plans will see over $465,000 dedicated to public works, community services, and administration projects from reserve interest earnings. Other options to fund these projects will come from grants that city staff have or will be applying for.
More than $395,000 from the utility operating reserve will be used for a five-year plan of water main replacements, street paving, and other public works projects. Council has a number of options to choose from in the coming year.
Special capital budget items were also included in the discussion with a number of possible new projects for the city to decide on in the coming weeks, including recreational additions to the Spruce Haven development. ....
