Wairoa District Council has stepped up and been awarded an improved grade in a recent performance report.
CouncilMARK is an independent assessment programme that assesses how councils are performing and is designed to support individual councils to improve the service and value they provide.
WDC has been given a BB rating in the 2021 report. Its last was back in 2017 and the council, which serves 8367 people, received a CCC rating.
Councils receive an overall performance rating from the Independent Assessment Board (IAB), from C to AAA. ....

The breakdown comes as the mayor of Wairoa, an isolated rural district, warns the changes in three waters could spell doom for local government.

Driver licence test delays affecting job chances in Tairāwhiti


The wait for driver licence tests in Gisborne is at least five weeks, leaving rural East Coast residents trying to enter the workforce in limbo.
NZTA and VTNZ say Covid-19 lockdowns have created a backlog of 42,000 driver tests nationwide.

One driving instructor called the wait for a practical test, which earlier this week stretched into June, extraordinary and said he had not seen it like this in 25 years.
When Mcinnes Driver Training office manager Colin Simpson tried to book practical driving tests in Gisborne last week, no spots were available.
There wasn t a single booking slot in Gisborne at all, forever, he said. ....
