Posted On June 2, 2021 Twenty seven Gloucester businesses made Virginia Living Magazine’s 2021 Best of Eastern Virginia list. They were: “Best Asian Restaurant” was awarded to Bangkok Noi Thai Cuisine located at 6724 Main Street. “Best Barbecue Restaurant” was awarded to Scoot’s BBQ located at 2091 George Washington Memorial Highway in Gloucester Point. Second place in “Best Breakfast/Lunch Restaurant” was awarded to Olivia’s in the Village located at 6597 Main Street. “Best Italian Restaurant” was awarded to Tony & Milena’s Pizzeria located at 2364 George Washington Memorial Highway in Hayes. “Best Mexican Restaurant” was awarded to Los Portales Mexican Restaurant located at 6541 Market Drive. ....
By Betty Wrenn Day on June 2, 2021 Luci Haywood Crittenden has traveled widely and brought home the best of what she cooked. When she worked, her cookies probably qualified for frequent flyer miles. Born and raised in the Severn area of Guinea, Luci Haywood Crittenden says she has been “cooking from Guinea to Greenland.” In addition to that span of 3,000 miles, Luci has traveled to all 50 states and many foreign countries, courtesy of lifelong experiences and marriage to Tom, an U.S. Air Force pilot. “I grew up savoring the foods cooked by my mother, grandmothers and aunts. On the Hogge side of my family, reunions and holidays, foods were really something to look forward to. Food was displayed on a long flatbed trailer. Tents, tables and chairs were from local churches. Women in the family tried to outdo each other, especially to see who could make the highest chocolate cake. My mother got 11 layers out of her dough,” Luci recalls. ....
Posted On June 2, 2021 1st Advantage Federal Credit Union and the Gloucester Kiwanis Club worked together to make toiletry bags for the homeless, delivering 20 bags to the GUEST homeless shelter in Gloucester. Each bag contained soap, deodorant, toothbrush and toothpaste and other toiletry items. The Kiwanis Club, as well as the members from the 1st Advantage Gloucester branch, donated the items for the bags. To help in this ongoing project, people are encouraged to drop off donations to the bank at 6511 George Washington Memorial Highway. Items received will be gathered for the GUEST shelter.
