COVID-19âs physical threat is fading more and more with each vaccine. Reversing its economic threat is taking a bit longer â and New Braunfels and Comal County businesses dependent on tourism dollars hope Memorial Day weekend could be the spark. âFor the summer itâs going to be a great gauge of the number of Texans who are ready to get out and travel again,â said Michael Meek, president and CEO of the Greater New Braunfels Chamber of Commerce. âBy all indicators, it appears they are. New Braunfels City Council members approved three zoning change requests during Monday s nearly six-hour meeting, but not before a group of residents expressed irritation and anger with how members are presiding over the city s rapid growth and zoning for proposed multifamily housing projects. Members took no action for lack of a motion on the second and final reading of an ordinance for a proposed rezoning of about 2.3 acres at 948 Broadway from M-2 Heavy Industrial District to MU-A Low-Intensity Mixed-Use District. But among the allowed property uses of MU-A zoning is multifamily housing, which drew ire from some residents. The growth is out of control. ....

It could all lead to a strong turnout at the polls when early voting begins on Monday. Elections Administrator Cynthia Jaqua projects more than 80,000 will cast ballots during early voting, which ends Tuesday, April 27, and on Election Day, May 1. ....
A 19-year-old student garnered the highest number of grass-roots donations, while two political action committees and prominent contributors are fueling candidates in New Braunfels City Council races and school district trustees elections, according to public records. A total of 14 candidates are on the May 1 ballot, seeking two positions each on the New Braunfels City Council and New Braunfels and Comal independent school districts â the most since 11 vied for council and Comal ISD slots in 2003 and before New Braunfels ISD shifted to spring elections in 2008. Brittany Soto, a college student seeking to unseat the incumbent Comal ISD board treasurer, totaled 29 donations, while council hopefuls Harry Bowers and Joy Harvey raised and spent the most in the Herald-Zeitungâs review of donations, loans and campaign expenditures filed last week and covering the period ending March 22. ....
