Spazju Kreattiv takes a look at the events which rocked a nation and drew international unwarranted attention to the place we call home
The events that occurred over the past few years have revealed many of the much less pleasant features of Maltese society. These less than savoury traits are often ignored or, at best, kept secret. but the shocking murder of a journalist brought them to light and held them up for scrutiny.
Spazju Kreattiv’s latest production, They Blew Her Up is a fictionalised dramatisation of the events that followed the brutal car-bombing of Daphne Caruana Galizia. Written and directed by Herman Grech, the treatment that this topic was given could not have been in more knowledgeable hands, since Grech himself was very actively involved in the development of the case from a journalistic standpoint. ....

Dido and Aeneas – a timeless opera in a timeless theatre


The Manoel Theatre is soon set to raise the curtain on Dido and Aeneas as this year’s beloved annual opera – and Malta’s historic national theatre ­has overcome all odds to bring it to the stage.

A tragic tale of love and loss, royalty and witches, stormy seas and magical misdirection. Although this sounds like the makings of a modern hit movie, in fact, this dramatic story thrilled its first audiences on stage more than 300 years ago.

Such are the universal and timeless themes of Dido and Aeneas, the first – and ultimately, the only – opera written by great English baroque composer Henry Purcell, based on a libretto by Nahum Tate. The opera was inspired by book IV of Virgil’s poem The Aeneid, with Purcell translating both the epic tale and its deeper ideas regarding death and deception for a then-contemporary audience. ....

Artistic inspiration comes in all sorts of wonderful forms – books, songs, films, places, other people. However, for renowned local composer Ruben Zahra, his latest spark of inspiration came in the form of Franz Kafka’s 20th century literary classic The Metamorphosis – a novella that follows the psychological struggle of Gregor Samsa, a young salesman who finds himself suddenly transformed into a large insect.
Zahra has spent the past year or so transforming this novella into Kafka’s Insect, an innovative production that will reinterpret the piece through music, sound and video-art, and which now can be viewed in its entirety online. ....
