More than 1K S.F. families asked Salvation Army for toys this year

Every December, the Salvation Army of San Francisco collects toys for families in need Legos and new bikes, books and stuffed animals that parents can pick up and stash under the tree, so every child has a present to open on Christmas morning.

This year, the organization has seen unprecedented demand, but donations have lagged far behind.
“As of (Thursday) we only had 10% of the toys we needed,” said Major Matthew Madsen, divisional secretary for the Salvation Army in San Francisco. “COVID definitely has impacted what we’re doing.” ....
