Bloat management is important when tending to livestock

Bloat in ruminant livestock ranges from mild cases of animal discomfort to a life-threatening situation. Bloat occurs when gases are trapped in the rumen of livestock.
Normally, these gases produced by gut microbes escape from the rumen by traveling up the esophagus during the processes of cud chewing and belching. In a recent Forage Focus video, Dr. Steve Boyles, OSU Beef Extension Specialist, and Christine Gelley, OSU Extension Educator in Noble County, discussed the causes, symptoms and treatment of bloat.

Bloat is observed most often during the spring flush and in pastures with a high legume content (over 50%), especially forage species like clovers and alfalfa. The early flush of grass also can lead to bloat. This type of bloat is often called “frothy bloat” as the gases are trapped in many small bubbles mixed with rumen fluids and partially digested forage material. ....

I recently completed several environment and natural resource courses. As an individual with a farming background, as well as a decent understanding of environmental issues, I was shocked by the mentality of professors and students in these courses and the bias against, and ignorance of, agriculture.
I believe we have all heard the jokes about people who think food originates at the grocery store. Hopefully, most residents in Wayne County and the surrounding area are close enough to farming to realize farms produce food that is transported to and sold in stores. ....

Soil temperatures are key to corn planting

Everyone views risk differently. Some people are more concerned with the level or severity of consequences associated with a risky action, while others focus more on the likelihood of a negative consequence arising from a specific action.
In order for something to be considered risky, it must have a level of uncertainty to it. When we think of planting our crops, the weather is our unknown variable. As a farmer or gardener, you get to choose when and what to plant, but the temperature and rainfall are out of our control.
For Ohio, the general recommendation for planting corn is in late April to early May. In a year with mild to warmer temperatures in April and May, planting earlier means a higher yield potential. The tradeoff is an earlier planting could experience a hard freeze after emergence or more likely, the seed will sit in the ground if the soil temperature does not stay at or above 50 degrees. ....
