The overwhelming majority of high school students at Everett High School (EHS) have chosen to stay remote at 75 percent – with less than 100 seniors choosing to come back to the building in person for their last month of school. It is one of the largest opt-outs of in-person high school in the area, with districts like Chelsea at about 50 percent in person. Supt. Priya Tahiliani said that 1,353 students (75 percent) chose to stay virtual in the high school through the first week, which started on May 10. There were 601 students that returned to the building. Of those students returning, the senior class was the smallest, with only 67 returning for their last month of school, and 317 remaining virtual. ....
Everett’s Kylie McCarthy was scoring goals at a record-setting clip as a midfielder on the Arlington Catholic High School girls lacrosse team. With 111 goals in two seasons, McCarthy was looking forward to another prolific campaign in the spring of 2020. But the COVID-19 pandemic forced the cancellation of interscholastic sports seasons across Massachusetts and beyond. A varsity player since her freshman year, McCarthy was sidelined from the sport she had competed in since fifth grade and from which she had emerged as an elite college lacrosse prospect. But the news is now all good for Kylie McCarthy as she returns for her senior season for the AC Cougars: the talented, 5-foot-2-inch scholar-athlete has signed a letter of intent to attend Babson College. ....
Maddy English was born on February 22, 1925 in Everett Massachusetts. Maddy was the daughter of Ambrose Tobias English, a longtime Everett city official who served as Everett’s Acting Mayor from July 1947-January 1948, and Anne English. While there were no organized interscholastic sports while she attended Everett High School, Maddy involved herself in pickup games around the Boston area, eventually joining a Massachusetts softball team in 1939, who played their home games on the concrete floor of the Boston Garden when the Bruins and Celtics teams were out of town. Her stand-out athleticism at third-base caught the eye of a professional baseball scout, who invited her to a tryout at Wrigley Field in Chicago in 1943. ....
