As noted, AEW President, CEO & General Manager Tony Khan announced today that Wednesday’s AEW Dynamite episode on TNT will be now a tribute to Brodie Lee (Jon Huber, fka Luke Harper). Harper passed away at the age of 41 on Saturday due to a non-COVID-19 lung issue. Khan announced a special card for Wednesday’s tribute show, which will see the favorite wrestlers of Lee’s son Brodie Jr. team up, for one night only. Khan announced Orange Cassidy, Cody Rhodes and Preston “10” Vance vs. Team Taz as one of the matches. He noted in a follow-up tweet that these are three of Brodie Jr.’s favorite wrestlers. ....
– As previously reported, tomorrow night’s episode of AEW Dynamite will be a tribute show to the late Brodie Lee (real name Jonathan Huber), who tragically passed away last Saturday. AEW changed up the lineup to make it a tribute show, and the previously planned New Year’s Smash lineups will be shifted to January 6 and 13. Dave Meltzer discussed the changes to Dynamite on today’s Wrestling Observer Radio. According to Meltzer, AEW also plans to tape the second New Year’s Smash edition of AEW Dynamite on January 6. As previously noted, rapper Snoop Dogg was set to appear on New Year’s Smash Night 2 when it was slated to air on that night in a guest commentary role. However, Meltzer speculated with the taping changes, Snoop Dogg could still hypothetically appear on the January 13 show if his material is taped on January 6. Either that, or he and Chris Jericho could swap places for their commentary gigs. ....
As we reported yesterday, while AEW Dynamite still defeated NXT in the ratings, it suffered a drop from the week before. Dynamite had 806,000 viewers and a 0.32 rating compared to NXT’s 766,000 viewers and 0.19 rating. The Wrestling Observer Newsletter has a full breakdown of the numbers, including a look at the shows quarter by quarter. Dynamite drew 420,000 viewers in the key 18-49 demographic. It was #3 for the night, behind MTV Challenge (839,000 viewers, 0.45) and Real Housewives of Orange County (1,004,000 viewers, 0.35). NXT had 252,000 in the demo. It came in at #34 for the night. Dynamite was #1 in 18-49 men for the night. It was strong with the male audience in general, also doing well in males 35-49. However they dropped in other demos, including going down to 18 in women 18-49, eighth in 18-34 overall, 12 in females 12-34 and 13 in males 12-34. NXT was #17 in males 18-49 and #6 in males 12-34. Overall, Dynamite was down 19% in viewers and 28.1% in the 1 ....
