Taoiseach addresses TUSEI issue in Dáil

Waterford, Ireland / WLR
Feb 4, 2021 8:22 AM
The Taoiseach says no decision has been made on the headquarters of the new university in the South East.
Michael Martin was responding to questions in the Dáil from Matt Shanahan.
The Independent TD says the technological university process appears to have turned negative, with outside political influence wishing to see WIT’s leadership credentials dismantled.
“The Taoiseach, the Government and the line Minister have taken the decision that despite being the institute of excellence in the region, WIT should not be confirmed to retain the headquarters and governance of the proposed new merger structure from the outset. It appears that proven leadership, performance and vision are to be hostages to political patronage, a recipe to deliver the educational equivalent of a half-bred camel rather than the promised thoroughbred racehorse.” ....

Bitter row errupts between Waterford and Kilkenny over plans for university HQ

The university row erupted after a long-running boundary dispute between Kilkenny and Waterford continues to fester.
Junior Health Minister Mary Butler, a Waterford-based TD, said Higher Education Minister Simon Harris had assured her that proposals of a Kilkenny base for TUSEI were mischievous and nothing more than kite-flying.
She said an application for the merger of WIT and ITC must be tabled by the end of April.
Huge work is being done on the TUSEI project at the moment in terms of engagement with unions, advisory groups and politicians with a shared objective of having a university of international standing in the southeast,” she told WLRFM. ....

TUSEI HQ issue 'parked' for now

There are concerns that the headquarters may not be in Waterford but Kilkenny.
The concerns arose following the meeting of a new Regional Engagement Advisory Group, headed by the Presidents of IT Carlow and WIT yesterday (Thursday) which was addressed by the Higher Education minister.
Simon Harris said TUSEI was not just for Waterford or for Carlow but also for Wexford, Kilkenny, Wicklow, Laois and Kildare:
“This region has suffered greatly in successive global economic and financial crises and is crying out for an anchor within the higher education and enterprise landscape that can deliver real change and prosperity; I firmly believe this is what the new TU will do,” he said. ....

€81,000 pay hike for senior official raised at PAC

Industry and Employment Correspondent
The decision to raise the pay of the incoming Secretary General of the Department of Health by €81,000 to €292,000 per year stinks to the high heavens, the Oireachtas Public Accounts Committee heard today.
The comment by Sinn Féin s Matt Carthy came as the committee considered correspondence from Independent TD Matt Shanahan who said the package outlined in the recent advertisement for the job .appears to be considerably in excess of the published civil service salary scales as revised on 1/10/20 .
I would ask you to consider exploring this issue with the Department to explore if our well-established public sector job evaluation processes were followed, and if this advertisement was an efficient and good measure, contributes to the improvement in public administration and would achieve value for money, Deputy Shanahan wrote.  ....
