The tip of a house on West Lake Avenue shows damage from a fire that destroyed the home in December 2018.
ALPENA A home left standing more than two years after a fire on Alpena’s north side is not a safety hazard, according to city officials.
The two-story home on West Lake Street burned the day after Christmas, 2018, when the upper story caught fire in the early hours of the morning.
All residents and pets escaped unharmed.
The home, though badly damaged, is structurally sound, and the city has allowed the homeowner time to be in a position to have it demolished, according to Alpena Mayor Matt Waligora.

The Alpena Township Board of Trustees voted 4-3 on Wednesday to reach out to the City of Alpena to gauge interest in discussing a possible contract for fire services.
Township Supervisor Nathan Skibbe said he will send the correspondence to Alpena Mayor Matt Waligora.
The possibility of the township maintaining and restructuring the township fire department on its own is still on the table too.
Trustees Cash Kroll and Steve Lappan, who are on the fire department ad hoc committee, voted against involving the city, as did Clerk Michele Palevich.
The board also voted to allow Fire Chief Dave Robbins to continue the hiring process for a job candidate who is attending college in Saginaw and expected to graduate in May. The hiring is pending the candidate filing required paperwork and passing background checks. The hire is also contingent on the man having a valid work visa, as he is from Canada.

ALPENA The Alpena Municipal Council is working to remove a cap on how many medical marijuana provisioning centers can operate in the city.
Council members voted 3-2 to direct city staff to draft an ordinance that would undo the limit, with Mike Nowak and Danny Mitchell voting against the motion to undo the cap, while Mayor Matt Waligora, Mayor Pro Tempore Cindy Johnson, and Councilwoman Amber Hess voted in favor of it.
The ordinance currently in effect limits to two the number of provisioning centers allowed in the city, and provisioning centers are not allowed downtown. Two provisioning centers have been granted licenses but have not yet opened.
