BEMIDJI Federal funding has been approved for the Bemidji veterans home, bringing the facility closer to reality.
For more than a decade, local officials and advocates have been fighting for a new veterans home to fill a major need in the region. There are an estimated 27,000 veterans living in northwest Minnesota, and nearly 75% of them are older than 55.
The effort to create a veterans home in Bemidji began in 2006 and this week, one of the final pieces of the puzzle was put in place. The United States Department of Veteran Affairs announced conditional approval for construction grants toward veterans homes in Bemidji, Montevideo and Preston, totaling more than $80 million. ....

Sales tax increase would fund new Itasca County jail

A bipartisan bill in the Minnesota Legislature would allow voters in Itasca County to decide on a one percent county-wide sales tax increase to pay off bonds for construction of a new $50 million county jail.
Itasca County is under a Minnesota Department of Corrections order to vacate its existing 108-bed jail due to physical plant conditions, operational issues, and the need for more jail space.
Itasca County has already issued $50 million in bonds to pay for construction of the new jail.
Money from the one percent sales tax increase would repay the $50 million bond.
“There just isn t a lot of other ways to fund it and get it done,” Rep. Spencer Igo, a Republican from Grand Rapids said. “This construction project has been planned for a long time. Buildings are reaching their life expectancy and it gets to the point where instead of repairing, you just have to build new.” ....

There's Nothing Artificial About the Sentiment Behind Modern Christmas Trees

One of Matt Bliss’s earliest holiday memories is of lying under his grandfather’s special Christmas tree as Lawrence “Bud” Stoecker spun the tree which was created from concentric plastic circles making reflections of light dance in a hypnotizing pattern. “At the time, I didn’t even realize my grandpa had made the tree,” Bliss recalls. “I was probably five or six years old, and I remember crawling underneath the tree and looking up, with each of my brothers on either side of me and my grandfather spinning it slightly, like this incredible kaleidoscope. Growing up, that was the most important thing for me: the vision of this tree on Christmas Eve every year and the feeling that it gave me.” ....
