In line with Climate Change Committee recommendations, for the first time the UK is to incorporate its share of international aviation and shipping emissions in its new carbon budget, BEIS said.
We want to continue to raise the bar on tackling climate change, and that s why we re setting the most ambitious target to cut emissions in the world, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson said in the statement.
In a planned address to the US Leaders Summit on Climate April 22, the prime minister would urge world leaders to join the UK in setting targets to reduce emissions by 2030 that align with net-zero, BEIS said. ....

British Airways flights emitted almost as much carbon dioxide in 2019 as all the vans on UK roads, according to newly released data obtained by non-profit group Transport & Environment (T&E).
The UK s flag carrier was the second highest-emitting airline in Europe before the Covid-19 pandemic hit the industry, the figures show, with 18.4 million tonnes (Mt) CO2 released in 2019, just short of the 19.4 Mt CO2 equivalent emitted by the UK’s vans in 2018.
Europe’s top aviation polluter is German national airline Lufthansa, which emitted 19.1 MtCO2 in 2019, with Air France in third place at 14.4 MtCO2. ....

Bhutan Is Carbon Negative NOW. Why Is It The Only Country?

Bhutan Is Carbon Negative NOW. Why Is It The Only Country?
There’s a small landlocked country, high up in South Asia’s Eastern Himalayas, that’s carbon negative. It’s the only carbon negative country in the world, taking in more greenhouse gases from the atmosphere than it emits. This lovely green country that spans 14,824 square miles is called the Kingdom of Bhutan. Its population is about 800,000, and it limits its influx of tourists to a certain number of people per day. There are other carbon-neutral countries in the world, but Bhutan is the only carbon negative one.
Most of Bhutan is covered in a dense forest. About 72% of the country is woodlands that act as a natural carbon sink, absorbing vast amounts of carbon dioxide. This is how the country is carbon negative; that and the fact that it’s relatively underdeveloped. Most citizens work in forestry or agriculture, so the country emits less than 2.5 million tons of CO2 each year. Luxembourg is about the sa ....
