It just had to be Joe Robertson. The senior attackman with a penchant for coming up clutch in overtime did it again Sunday, spiking the ball off the turf and into the net as he fell to the ground and sending Duke back to championship weekend with a 10-9 NCAA quarterfinal win over Loyola at Arlotta Stadium in South Bend, Ind. ....

Sam Shafer is 6-foot-3, 235 pounds. Loyola’s senior goalie needed all his big body frame to make the last-second save that will go down as one of the most clutch plays in recent NCAA men’s lacrosse tournament memory. Shafer denied Denver’s Alex Simmons on the doorstep before time expired to preserve Loyola’s 14-13 win Sunday over the seventh-seeded Pioneers, exasperating the sold-out 40-percent capacity crowd at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium and sending the Greyhounds to the NCAA quarterfinals. It was Shafer’s 16th save of the game. ....

Sixth-seeded Notre Dame took its first punch of the postseason, surviving a spirited second-half rally by CAA champion Drexel to win 10-8 in an NCAA tournament first-round game Saturday at Denver’s Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium. The Fighting Irish (8-3) are hosting the quarterfinals next Sunday in South Bend, Ind., and advanced past the first round for the 10th time in the last 11 seasons.
