Most Japan firms want Suga out of power despite Olympics success: Reuters poll

By Tetsushi Kajimoto TOKYO (Reuters) - A majority of Japanese firms want Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga to lose office through general elections that must be held this year, frustrated with the lack of leadership in his handling of COVID-19 and its economic fallout, a Reuters poll showed. The Reuters Corporate Survey shows the Olympics did not help keep support for Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga from sliding below a make-or-break 30% threshold in some domestic media polls, clouding the fate of his premiership. I cannot hold expectations for the opposition but at least the Suga administration should change, a manager of an information service firm wrote in the survey. Even if the ruling bloc manages to stay in power through the elections, Suga could come under pressure to step down if his coalition loses enough seats, some analysts say. The ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) may be a better choice in terms of corona response and quality of policymakers, a chemicals maker manager wrote. ....

Sherman stresses U.S. support for Lithuania against 'coercive' China

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman spoke with Lithuania s foreign minister on Friday and reiterated U.S. support for the country in the face of pressure from China over its decision to develop ties with Taiwan, the State Department said. Sherman told Gabrielius Landsbergis the United States was resolute in our solidarity with Lithuania, a NATO ally and a partner as a member of the European Union, over what she termed China s coercive behavior towards Vilnius, the statement said. The two diplomats also discussed the political situation in Belarus, reaffirming support for the Belarusian pro-democracy movement and calling on the president of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, to immediately halt a campaign of orchestrating irregular migrant flows across its borders, it said. China this week demanded that Lithuania withdraw its ambassador in Beijing and said it would recall the Chinese envoy to Vilnius in a row over the Baltic state allowing Chinese-claimed Tai ....

BUCHAREST (Reuters) - Romanian Prime Minister Florin Citu said on Saturday he will nominate Liberal lawmaker and economist Dan Vilceanu as finance minister. TOKYO (Reuters) - Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga s support ratings hit 29.0% in August, down 0.3 point from the previous month, a poll by Jiji news agency showed on Friday, a sign the Tokyo Olympic Games failed to give a boost to the premier s popularity.
