Cork City torched, Dublin City Hall seized

The burning of Cork City centre 100 years ago this week was not only one of the worst ‘reprisals’ carried out by British crown forces, it was also a direct attack on democracy with the destruction of the City Hall, seat of the City Council. That attack on democracy was seen again soon afterwards in Dublin when British forces seized the City Hall. 
The Auxiliaries went on a concerted rampage in Cork City centre on 11 December 1920. They burned down shops and other business premises and specifically targeted the City Hall and library. Fire Brigade hoses were cut with bayonets to ensure that the destruction was complete. They caused millions of pounds worth of damage and severely impacted the economy of the city. ....

On the morning of 11 December 1920, a climate of fear and uncertainty hung over the city of Cork. Though Christmas was a mere two weeks away, the people of the city had little to be cheerful about. That morning, Cork was a city at war. 
The previous eleven months had seen Cork No. 1 Brigade of the IRA intensify its campaign of guerrilla warfare against the forces of the Crown. In response, the British authorities had sent Black and Tans reinforcements to the RIC, imposed curfew, introduced Martial Law and deployed K Company of the Auxiliary Division of the RIC to Victoria Barracks. A series of nocturnal arson attacks on the City Hall, Sinn Féin offices, business premises and the homes of republican sympathisers had also taken place.  ....

The burning of Cork by Crown forces took place on the night of 11–12 December 1920, during the Irish War of Independence.  |More than 40 business premises, and 300 homes were destroyed, across five acres of the City centre.
Lots of events across Friday, Saturday, Sunday to mark the anniversary – involving Lord Mayor, Taoiseach and more.

A Covid-19 compliant ceremony, attended by the Lord Mayor of Cork, will be broadcast on the Cork City Council Facebook page at 10.30pm this evening to mark the centenary of the Burning of Cork.
The webcast ceremony will begin at 10.30pm on https://www.facebook.com/corkcitycouncilofficial/, the time 100 years ago when calls in relation to the fires were first received by Cork City Fire Brigade. ....
