Parents Want Permanent Virtual Schools But It's Not For Everyone

As the U.S. slowly returns to normal life, pre-pandemic, and resumes in-person classes this fall, some parents prefer virtual schools to be permanently available to their children.
For Colorado mom Samantha Lucero, virtual classes worked for her 13-year-old daughter in the autism spectrum. Since virtual schools do not require kids to be physically present in class, Lucero s daughter didn t have to struggle with socializing, communicating, and adapting to the changes around their environment.
As she was learning from home during the pandemic, the teenager was able to concentrate on her school work. So, when an option to enroll her daughter in a permanent online school opened at the Colorado Springs School District, in conjunction with the Spark Online Academy, Lucero talked to her daughter. The latter was excited to continue with her online classes in the fall. ....

Lincoln – Nebraska Athletics recognized many of its top performers during the 2020-21 academic year with A Virtual Night at the Lied. The event recognizes the outstanding performances in competition, classroom and community outreach and was highlighted by the live announcement of the major award winners, including the Male and Female Student-Athlete of the Year, the Best Male and Female Athlete and the Outstanding Male and Female Newcomer.

Evan Hymanson (Men’s Gymnastics) won the most coveted awards at the 31st annual event, as they were selected as the 2021 Female and Male Student-Athletes of the Year, respectively, by a vote of the faculty members of the Intercollegiate Athletics Committee. ....

What happens when California students in special education return to the classroom?


For students with disabilities, the pandemic has been a landscape of extremes. Some have thrived with distance learning and want to continue in the fall, while many have languished without the in-person support of therapists and teachers and have lost ground academically, socially and emotionally.
But staffing shortages, a lack of data and a backlog of evaluations mean it could be months before schools get a clear picture of students’ needs.
“Students with disabilities are not a monolith. Each student is an individual. And right now, we don’t know exactly what the impact has been,” said Meghan Whittaker, policy director for the National Center for Learning Disabilities. “We need data, assessments, guidance and accountability.” ....

Bike challenge for kids charity | This Is Lancashire


FUNDRAISER: Mark and Megan
A RELATIVE of a three-year-old girl who died from a rare cancer last year is to undertake a gruelling 150-mile tandem bike ride for charity.
Megan Whittaker, from Little Lever, will take on the challenge with husband Mark in aid of Children with Cancer UK.
The June 26 challenge bike ride is more than 150 miles and will see the pair travel from Seascale in Cumbria to Whitby.
It will take around14 hours, where they will be climbing to approximately 12,000 ft following a 5am set-off.
Megan s cousin s daughter, Lily-Mai Pugh, started becoming poorly at the start of the first lockdown and was initially she was diagnosed with a viral infection. ....

Huskers Ready for Columbus Regional


The Nebraska women’s golf team makes its first NCAA Regional appearance since 2008, when the Huskers compete at the Columbus Regional, May 10-12.
The 18-team event opens Monday with tee times beginning at 7 a.m. (CT) on the 6,358-yard, par-72 layout at Ohio State’s Scarlet Course. The three-day, 54-hole event that features a five-count-four scoring format continues on Tuesday with the second round again at 7 a.m. (CT). The tournament concludes Wednesday with final-round tee times starting at 7 a.m. (CT).
Live scoring for the tournament will be available at GolfStat.com. 
Kate Smith, a fifth-year senior from Detroit Lakes, Minn., leads the Huskers into NCAA Tournament play after capturing Nebraska’s first-ever Big Ten individual title.
